Digital Photo Frames

Classic wood or plastic photo frames are outdated. The 21st century doesn't mean displaying one old picture for years and years in the living room, but using all of the digital world possibilities by creating slideshows with mesmerising transitions to display all the newest photographs for the enjoyment of family and friends. Enter digital photo frames.

Some of them smaller than a keychain, others larger than your average TV set, digital photo frames go beyond displaying one simple picture: some frames come with clocks or calendars, others add video and audio playback (yes, some of them have integrated speakers), some have a remote control, others have Bluetooth and/or wireless capabilities. So it's no wonder that the price can vary a lot from one photo frame to another and from brand to brand.

Do not worry, though, LCD technology has become pretty affordable, so digital photo frames with low prices can be found on the market. Some of them even manage to offer the same sought-after features and performance as pricier models while still maintaining a low price. It's obvious, then, that you may not automatically want to look only for the well-known brands or all the hi-tech options, when you can easily get good-looking pictures at a low price.

HP DreamScreen 100, for example, is a big brand product and, thus, has a big price tag to match, hovering around the £125 mark. However, the fact that it comes from an acclaimed manufacturer doesn't necessarily make this one a winner. Tech reviews have shown that, even if the image quality is great, the user interface is faulty and slow in professional tests - simple images took as long as 9 seconds to load. So it's a good thing to always read a few reviews and compare prices and performances of various digital photo frames before deciding on buying one.

A low priced digital photo frame, yet a feature-rich one is the Coby DP850. Featuring a glossy black design, the DP850 has a vibrant 8-inch TFT LCD colour display. With an 800x600 resolution, 1GB of built-in memory, a full-size USB port and multiple memory card slots, it supports the most popular movie and audio files. Integrated stereo speakers, a full-function remote control, calendar and alarm clock functions are also included. All for a really low price among the digital photo frames - £45.

The Pandigital PanTouch is another cheap digital photo frame with good reviews. What distinguishes the 8-inch PanTouch model is its traditional-looking black frame and the incorporation of a variation of the familiar touch-screen interface (rather than touching the screen, as you would do with a device like the iPad, you instead touch the edge or perimeter of the frame to call up a menu and navigate). With a low price tag hovering around £75, the PanTouch has 512MB of built-in memory, USB connectivity for digital cameras and computers, as well as slots for virtually all memory card types. And that's not all. This little digital photo frame supports MP3 and video playback and has a bundled remote control.

Another excellent choice to consider from the cheap category is the Insignia NS-DPF8IP. Tech reviews have praised the fact that while other digital photo frames focus more on the "photo frame" aspect than the "digital", the Insignia NS-DPF8IP tends to favour multimedia features. The NS-DPF8IP has no wireless capability, but it has 2GB internal memory (enough to keep plenty of media on the frame), built-in CompactFlash and SD/MMC/MS/XD card slots, USB and mini-USB connections and line-in audio for separate media players. It can't be mounted on a wall, like the vast majority, but it has a slot for an included remote control and a pop-out built-in iPod dock, so it can easily load and play video and music files on the frame's 8-inch screen. Add the built-in speakers, the flexible alarm clock and the incredibly low price of 60 quid and appreciate an Insignia frame that manages to be much more than just a simple digital photo frame.
