How to Take Better Photographs?

Photography is the blend of creativity and technique assisted with Photography equipment. Centerpiece of your photographic equipments is a good Camera. I would recommend having at least an entry level DSLR Camera with a standard zoom lens. You may choose between Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony etc., all these companies make decent DSLRs and they have affordable and attractive range of lenses. A standard 17-200 mm zoom lens with auto focus and image stabilizer option will be suitable. Now, you got the Camera and lens. Now let's get ready for some action.

First step of taking photograph is finding a subject. You need to have a subject and its surroundings to complete the composition of your photograph. Subject may be anything which stands out or attracts focus. It may be a flower, flying ducks, running horse, a butterfly, setting sun or anything.

Next look around the subject to see what makes a nice composition. For example, if setting Sun is your subject, you may also like to include bit of sky and passing clouds which may be reflecting the colors. So include the surroundings just enough to make the subject stand out and create a nice composition. It requires creativity and practice. So open your creative eye and compose a great picture in your mind before taking it.

Now, watch out for distracting objects in the background and foreground. For example, you need to make sure that (unless you are photographing a vast landscape) your background is not overtaking your subject. A bright object in the background, a passing car at the foreground, a tree branch covering the key parts of your subject etc. must be watched out for.

If you are taking outdoor portraits in a bright sunny day (especially mid-day), sunlight may cause dark shadows on the face which you may not want. To avoid that situation, you may use your Camera Flash to bright up the face of your subject. Make sure you use fill flash mode. However, you may not need the flash if you are shooting in the morning, evening or in an overcast day.

Walk around your subject to find the perfect angle or distance. Subjects look different from different angle and sometimes getting closer or farther also helps to get better composition or bring out a different character or different side of your subject. So before you compose and take your shot, walk around your subject to get the best view you looking for or simply zoom in or out in order to get the perfect position.

Sometimes moving the subject off the center brings out a different perspective and makes a better composition. Try to look into the view finder or LCD screen of your Camera and look to your subject in different position. Make sure to focus on your subject and lock the focus before you move the Camera to re-position your subject. Locking the focus is always a good idea as your don't want to blur your focus. You rather blur the background if you need to.

Holding your Camera is also crucial. If you are shooting a tall object, holding the Camera vertically is a good idea. For landscape and close up portrait, hold it horizontal. For fast moving objects, hold it close to your chest (or use tripod) in order to avoid Camera shake.

Try to control and modify the surrounding whenever you can, to go to the favor of your photo session. Feel like a movie director when taking your pictures. Ask people to move or take different positions or ask them to change their expressions to make a perfect shot.

As you have composed the photograph, now you need to click it. First of all, you need to find out what shutter speed is suitable to take that particular picture. For example, to shoot a moving object such as running horse, you need to freeze a moment. On the other hand, you need a higher shutter speed. It also require bit of practice. However, a shutter speed between 1/500 - 1/2000 may be ideal.

And last and final, learn some darkroom techniques. If you do digital, learning basic Photoshop helps greatly. Some simple re-touching techniques can improve your photographs dramatically. Also using Photoshop or similar software, you will be able to crop the photos in order to get a perfect composition and get rid of unwanted surroundings.

So good luck with your Camera and your Photography.
